“Old age is not a defeat, but a victory, not a punishment, but a privilege” (Ethel Percy Andrus).
“Aging is not a problem; it represents a real and thrilling challenge. It is one thing to recognize that older people represent the nation’s greatest single human resource available, and it is quite another to do something about it" (Ethel Percy Andrus).

THESIS:
With the “Taking a stand” project about Chicago’s history it shows that Ethel Percy Andrus was an important person in shaping the retired people's lives as she was an elder rights activist in which she helped the elder with a more monetary standing as previously it wasn’t a lot, this was impactful even to this day as the elderly still are able to provide receive welfare, via the organization AARP (American Association of Retired Persons), which help with achieving the necessary rights of an elderly citizen. The major reason why this is important is because of the entitlement that the elderly still hold.

Historical Context:
It started with Ethel Percy Andrus retiring so that she could take care of her elderly mother. Her monthly pension was roughly $60 --which in 2010 terms would be roughly 735.5 dollars -- despite her years of service, she barely lived enough with that amount of money. She later discovered a former colleague living in a chicken coop, in which she founded the National Retired Teachers Association (now a part of AARP).
